What it is

An AI Overview tracker tells you whether Google cited you.

RankX AI reads every rank check for an AI Overview, records whether you were named or cited, and keeps the sources Google linked instead.

  • What it records

Presence, citation and sources, per check

On every rank check of a tracked keyword, RankX AI records whether an AI Overview appeared, whether your brand was named in it, whether your site was cited among its sources, and every domain the Overview linked. Each record carries the market, the device and your ranking position at the time.

A history of checks, never a single screenshot.

  • Who it is for

    In-house SEOs, agencies and founders

In-house marketers who own a keyword list and want to know which of those keywords Google now answers itself; SEO and GEO agencies reporting AI Overview citations beside classic positions for each client; founders who want one screen that says cited or not cited, without another tracking solution to run.

If you already track keywords, there is nothing new to set up.

  • What it costs

    From $49 a month, 100 tracked keywords

A rank check costs 5 credits per keyword, and the AI Overview capture reserves 5 more that are released in full if no Overview rendered, so a keyword settles at 5 or 10 credits per check. Checks run daily on Growth, Pro, Agency Pro and Agency Scale, and every 3 days on Starter and Agency Starter, with a trial account re-checking weekly.

The 7-day trial's 1,000 credits cover 100 keyword checks with an Overview present, or 200 without.

Why AI Overviews matter now

Google said at I/O in May 2026 that AI Overviews had passed 2.5 billion monthly users. Semrush measured the share of commercial searches carrying one rising 71% between November 2025 and April 2026, across more than 600,000 US keywords, so Google’s AI answers are reaching the search queries that sell.

The glossary entry on what an AI Overview is covers what Google builds one from.

The stakes

Google answering first costs clicks. Being cited wins some back.

Independent studies, not RankX AI data, measure what an AI Overview costs in clicks, what a citation returns, and how fast cited sites turn over.

Clicks fall when an Overview appears

Across 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions (Seer Interactive), an uncited page under an AI Overview on an informational query earned about 9,445 clicks per million impressions, against about 33,500 with no Overview.

A #1 position under an Overview is not the #1 it used to be.

Cited brands out-click the uncited

In the same study, a page cited inside the AI Overview earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than an uncited one, but still about 38% fewer than with no Overview.

A citation beats everyone else on that results page. It does not buy back the click.

Ranking buys less of the Overview each month

Ahrefs followed 863,000 search result pages. The share of AI Overview citations held by the organic top ten fell from 76% to 38% in seven months.

Page one is the floor for a citation, not the guarantee.

Where the figures come from

Independent studies, not RankX AI data: Seer Interactive (53 brands, 5.47 million queries, January 2025 to February 2026, where organic click-through in February 2026 was 2.36% with an AI Overview and 3.82% without) and Ahrefs (863,000 SERPs, July 2025 to March 2026). If the numbers move, this page moves with them.

How it works

How do you track AI Overviews? Add your keywords.

Google AI Overviews sit above the results, so RankX AI reads them in every rank check. Assistants run separately, on your prompts.

Rank tracking

Your tracked keywords, checked in Google by market and device, then read for the answer above the results: part of rank tracking, never an add-on. Positions from the same checks live on Google rank tracking.

  • Google AI OverviewsGoogle
  1. Add the keywords, by market and device

Track your target keywords for the UK on desktop, the same keywords on mobile, or the same keywords in another market, and each is its own row. AI Overviews rank tracking needs no separate setup: any keyword you track for its Google ranking is already checked for an Overview.

  2. The rank check captures the Overview

When RankX AI checks a keyword's position, it reads whether an Overview appeared above the search results, captures the text it could read, and records every source cited inside it.

  3. Read the three verdicts

Each check records mentioned, not mentioned or unknown for your brand, and cited or not cited for your site. Unknown means an Overview was detected and not captured, and it is never counted as a miss.

  4. Work the cited-domains list

Every domain cited across your keywords is ranked, with your own site at its true rank. Add any rival to your tracked competitors in one click, and read the citation gaps on your uncited keywords as the brief for the page to publish next.

Prompt checks

Your tracked prompts, asked on the assistants you set and read for who gets named: a different pipeline, with a prompt as the unit, not a keyword. It has its own page: AI visibility tracking.

How RankX AI keeps the two pipelines apart

Gemini and Google AI Overviews are both Google’s, and RankX AI still reads them through two pipelines: one answers the prompts you track overnight, the other sits above the results Google returns for the keywords you track. The overnight schedule is on the methodology page.

What you see

Overview or not, cited or not, on every tracked keyword.

Beside each keyword, RankX AI ranks every domain those Overviews cited, and shows what an Overview costs your clicks at the same rank.

Presence on every tracked keyword

Each keyword shows whether Google answered it with an AI Overview on its latest check, and whether that answer cites you. Presence is recorded per check, never assumed, and a keyword where you rank on page one without a citation is your working list.

The click tax, on your own keywords

RankX AI reads Search Console's click-through beside its own Overview detection on the same keyword, compares the two inside matched ranking bands, and prints no figure until each side holds enough search queries to mean something.

Present per checkGoogle does not show an AI Overview on every query or every run. RankX AI records presence per check, which is why the trend matters more than any single day.

Unknown, never a missAn Overview that is detected but cannot be captured is recorded as unknown. RankX AI never turns a check it could not read into a not cited.

Named is not citedBrand mentions in the Overview's text and citations of your site among its sources diverge routinely. RankX AI records the two separately and never swaps one for the other.

Sample data with invented brands and illustrative click-tax bars.

Where the figures come from

RankX AI does not publish measured citation claims about companies that never asked, so the brands above are invented. The cited domains are real platforms, shown as the kinds of sources Google reads, and the click-tax bars show the shape of the comparison, not a measured figure.

Versus Search Console

What does an AI Overview tracker add to Search Console?

Since June 2026 Search Console has reported generative AI impressions, but no queries, no clicks, and never who the Overview cited instead of you.

Where the Search Console facts come from

AI Mode is a separate surface; how AI Mode differs from AI Overviews is its own article.

Then what

When you are not cited, the sources become your brief.

An AI Overview lists the sources Google read. In RankX AI, that list of directories, forums and rivals names the page to publish next.

  1. See where you stand today

The free audit runs suggested prompts across the AI assistants, reads the answers, and shows who gets named and cited instead of you.

  2. Fix what keeps pages out of answers

Website Audit finds the issues on the pages you already have, graded by severity, so the work is a list rather than a guess.

  3. Publish the page that is missing

Content Studio briefs it, drafts it and publishes it to WordPress, writing the SEO title and meta description through your SEO plugin and reading every field back.

Nobody can promise you a citation: Google chooses its own sources.

What makes a page worth citing

What you control is whether there is a page worth citing, and the guide to ranking in Google AI Overviews covers what that page needs.

Questions

Questions people ask about AI Overview tracking.

Straight answers on how AI Overviews behave, what RankX AI records about them, what it costs, and how to read each result.

What is an AI Overview tracker?

An AI Overview tracker, also sold as an AI Overviews rank tracker, is software that checks a set of keywords in Google search on a schedule and records, for each check, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether your brand was named inside it, whether your site was cited among its sources, and which other domains were cited. RankX AI runs this inside rank tracking, so the Overview is read on the same check that records your position.

What is a Google AI Overview?

A Google AI Overview is the AI-written answer shown above the ordinary search results on some searches, with a panel of linked sources beside it. Google decides per query and per run whether one appears. When it does, the sites it cites and the rankings underneath it see very different click-through, which is why being cited in it matters.

How do I track AI Overviews with RankX AI?

Enter your domain, then add the target keywords you want to track, each with a market and a device. From then on every rank check on those keywords also reads the AI Overview above the results and records presence, your citation state and the cited sources. The AI Overviews screen lists each keyword's latest verdict, and the citations screen ranks every domain Google cited across them. Nothing else needs configuring.

How is an AI Overview tracker different from a rank tracker?

A rank tracker records where your page sits in the search results. An AI Overview tracker records what sits above those results: whether Google answered the query itself, and whose pages it used to do so. The two disagree routinely, which is the point: a page can rank fourth and be absent from the Overview above it, or rank nowhere and be cited. RankX AI records both on the same check, which is what AI Overviews rank tracking means here: the position and the Overview, paired per keyword in one set of tracking data.

Does RankX AI track AI Overviews separately from ChatGPT and the other assistants?

Yes, and they never mix. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot are checked against the prompts you track, each prompt on the assistants and schedule you set for it. Google AI Overviews are read by the rank tracker against the keywords you track, with every rank check, by market and device. Two pipelines, two units of measurement, reported side by side and never averaged together.

Do I have to rank on page one to be cited in an AI Overview?

Ranking helps, and it is less of a guarantee every month. When Ahrefs followed 863,000 search result pages, the share of AI Overview citations held by the organic top ten fell from 76% to 38% in seven months. Google increasingly cites the page that answers the question rather than the page that ranks for it, which is why RankX AI shows you the cited domains and not just your position.

What triggers a Google AI Overview?

No published rule says what will trigger an AI Overview: Google decides per query and per run. Across 5.47 million queries tracked by Seer Interactive between January 2025 and February 2026, comparison queries showed an AI Overview 95% of the time and question-format queries 86%, against 36% of informational queries overall, 8% of commercial queries and 5% of transactional ones. Semrush then measured the share of commercial searches carrying one rising 71% between November 2025 and April 2026, which is why RankX AI records presence per keyword rather than assuming it.

Why does AI Overview presence change between checks?

Because Google changes it. The same keyword can show an AI Overview on one run and none on the next, and presence also differs by market and by device. RankX AI records presence per check rather than declaring that a keyword has or does not have an Overview, and when an Overview is detected but cannot be captured, the verdict is recorded as unknown rather than as not cited. The trend across checks is the number worth acting on.

Can I see which domains Google cites instead of me?

RankX AI shows you exactly that: every citation across your tracked keywords, aggregated into a ranked list of cited domains, with your own site shown at its true rank among them. Each domain has a drill-down: what it is to you, which of your searches it is cited on, whether you are cited there too, and the pages Google used. Any rival on the list can be added to your tracked competitors in one click.

Can Google Search Console show me AI Overview visibility?

Only in part, and the gap is why AI Overview tracking exists. Since June 2026 Search Console (GSC) has reported impressions from Google's generative AI features by page, country, device and date, and the report reached every site on 31 August 2026. It merges AI Overviews with AI Mode, carries no query dimension and no clicks, and never records the checks where the Overview cited someone else on your keyword. RankX AI records presence, your citation state and every cited domain per keyword, per check.

Can I see traffic from AI Overviews?

Not directly, and no tool can. Google Analytics reports a click from an AI Overview as ordinary Google organic search traffic, with nothing to mark it, and Search Console reports AI Overview appearances as impressions only. What RankX AI can measure is the click-through difference: on the keywords where it detected an Overview, it compares Search Console's click-through with and without one inside matched ranking bands, and prints no figure until each side holds enough queries. That is the AI Overview click tax, and it sits beside your Search Console data in the app.

How often is AI Overview data updated?

With every rank check on the keyword: AI Overview data rides the rank tracker rather than a separate job, so the cadence is the one your rank tracking runs on, which is daily on Growth, Pro, Agency Pro and Agency Scale, and every 3 days on Starter and Agency Starter, with a trial account re-checking weekly. Each check writes its own record, whether an Overview appeared, whether it cited you, and every domain it cited, so what builds up is a history of checks rather than one screenshot.

What does AI Overview tracking cost with RankX AI?

AI Overview tracking is part of rank tracking on every plan, from $49 a month for 100 tracked keywords. A rank check costs 5 credits per keyword, and the AI Overview capture reserves 5 more that are released in full if no Overview rendered, so a keyword settles at 5 or 10 credits per check. The 7-day trial includes 1,000 credits and needs no card, and the full rate card is on the pricing page.

Does RankX AI track AI Overviews in the UK and other markets?

Yes. Each tracked keyword carries its own market and device, so a keyword tracked for the UK on mobile is checked in a UK mobile result and its Overview is read from that page. Track the same keyword for another market as a second row. Presence and citations differ by market, which is one of the reasons a single check from your own browser tells you little about anyone else's results.

Is there a free AI Overview checker?

Yes. RankX AI's free AI Overview Checker runs one keyword for one market without an account and shows whether an AI Overview appeared and which sources it named. It is a single check on a single day, which is a snapshot of a surface that changes most days, so it answers whether a keyword is worth tracking rather than how you are doing on it.

Does blocking AI crawlers affect Google AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews are built from Google's ordinary search index, crawled by Googlebot, so blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot or the other AI crawlers does not touch them. Google-Extended does not remove a site from AI Overviews either. Search Console's Search generative AI setting, under Settings, removes a site from AI Overviews and AI Mode and leaves its ordinary results untouched. It has applied to every site since 31 August 2026. For single pages, nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex still limit what an AI Overview may use, and each one also changes the ordinary result.
