See your titles and descriptions as Google shows them.

Check one page, type a title and description in, or check a whole Shopify or WooCommerce store. Each title and meta description is measured in pixels, the way search results cut them, shown as a result preview, and checked for length, repeats across pages and the problems that make Google rewrite them.

What it checks

Measured in pixels, the way results are cut

Google sets no character limit for titles or meta descriptions. It shortens them to fit the width of the results page, so wide letters such as W and M run out of room sooner than narrow ones. The checker measures each one in pixels, in the font and size results use on desktop.

Title length

About 580 pixels

Desktop titles are usually cut near 580 pixels, roughly 50 to 60 characters. Short titles get flagged too: they leave out what shoppers search for.

Description length

About 920 pixels

Desktop descriptions are usually cut near 920 pixels, roughly 150 to 160 characters. Very short ones waste the space.

Duplicates

Shared across pages

In store mode, any title or description used by more than one page, the most common problem on product catalogues.

The rest

What else changes the result

No title or description, a noindex that hides the page, capitals, offers in the title, and a heading that disagrees with the title, which Google may use instead.

Writing them

Product titles and descriptions that earn the click

Title

Product first, brand last

Product, the detail that matters most, then your store name: “Linen Shirt, Navy | Juniper & Co”. If anything is cut, it is the store name.

Description

A reason to choose you

What it is, who it is for, and one thing that sets your store apart, such as delivery, returns or how it is made. Write it for the shopper, not as a keyword list.

Where to change them

Shopify and WooCommerce

On Shopify, open the product and edit Search engine listing at the bottom. On WooCommerce, your SEO plugin adds a title and description box to each product.

Questions

About the Title and Meta Description Checker

How long should a title tag be?

Google sets no character limit. It cuts title links to fit the results page, which on desktop is usually about 580 pixels, roughly 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters such as W and M use more room than narrow ones, which is why this checker measures pixels rather than counting characters.

How long should a meta description be?

Again there is no fixed limit. Desktop results usually cut descriptions near 920 pixels, roughly 150 to 160 characters. Put the reason to click in the first sentence so it survives a shorter cut on mobile.

Why does Google show a different title from mine?

Google builds the title link from the title tag, the main heading, other headings, links to the page and the site name. It rewrites titles that are missing, very long, stuffed with keywords, the same on many pages, or that disagree with the page heading. The checker flags each of those.

Can it check every product in my store?

It checks the home page and up to 15 best-selling product pages of a Shopify or WooCommerce store in one go, and finds titles and descriptions that more than one page shares. For every product at once, the free Ecommerce SEO Audit checks titles and descriptions across the whole catalogue.

Where do I change titles and descriptions on Shopify?

Open the product in Shopify admin and scroll to Search engine listing, then Edit. The page title and meta description there are what search engines read; the product title stays as shoppers see it on the page.

Where do I change them on WooCommerce?

Your SEO plugin adds a title and description box to each product, usually below the product editor. Without one, WooCommerce uses the product name as the title and leaves the description to Google.

Does the length of my meta description affect rankings?

No. The description does not change where a page ranks. It changes whether people click: a clear, specific description that fits wins more clicks from the same position.
