Estimated question demand: An estimate of how often this is asked, modelled by our data provider from Google's People Also Ask results. It is not a count of ChatGPT or Gemini queries. A row with no figure is marked “no estimate” and its score carries an asterisk: a question we could not price is not a question nobody asks. Sample data for an invented brand.
What it is
An AI prompt research tool finds the questions before you pay to track them.
AI prompt research is the work of finding which questions people put to AI assistants about your market, so the prompts you track are questions somebody actually asks.
What it does
Seeds in, ranked questions out
Give RankX AI up to eight seed topics and it returns the questions people ask assistants around them, in the market and language you choose, each with an estimate of the demand behind it and a flag on anything close to a prompt you already track.
The list you track is researched rather than guessed.
Who it is for
Marketers, agencies and founders
In-house marketers who own the prompt list, SEO and GEO agencies building a panel for each client, and founders who want to know what buyers ask before they spend a credit measuring it. It is a screen in the app and an MCP tool, so nobody needs a developer.
If your prompt list was written at a whiteboard, this replaces the whiteboard.
What it costs
35 credits a run, on every plan
One run costs 35 credits whatever it returns, and a run that returns nothing usable costs nothing. Tracking a question you keep then costs 5 credits per assistant per check, which is the recurring bill this research exists to spend well.
The 7-day trial's 1,000 credits cover 28 runs.
Prompts are longer than keywords and mostly unmatched by them: Semrush measured the average ChatGPT prompt at 13.5 words without web search and 8.7 words with it in early 2026, and found that 65% to 85% of prompts matched no keyword in its database. Google said in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users.
The problem
A prompt nobody asks measures nothing, every night.
Prompt tracking measures the list you give it. RankX AI checks each prompt on 6 assistants at 5 credits a check, so a guessed list bills you every night and tells you nothing.
Nobody asks it
A prompt invented at a whiteboard can be word-perfect about your business and still be a question no buyer has ever typed into an assistant.
It reads zero visibility for ever, and the zero means nothing.
The same question twice
Prompt lists grow by addition, and nothing in a spreadsheet notices that two phrasings are one question. Both get checked, every night, on every assistant.
You pay twice and learn once.
One shape, over and over
Question shapes are not interchangeable. Missing from a round-up is a different failure from missing beside a named rival, and a list written in one sitting is usually all one shape.
The shape you never track is the failure you never see.
None of this is an argument against tracking prompts. It is an argument for knowing which ones are worth the nightly bill before you commit to them.
How it works
Seed the topics you sell against. Read back the questions behind them.
One run takes up to eight seed topics and returns the questions people ask AI assistants around them, in the market and language you choose, at the depth you choose.
Seeds
Up to eight topics a run
Type the topics your buyers care about, or leave it empty and RankX AI derives them from your services, your topic clusters, your own Search Console queries and the searches assistants ran while answering your existing prompts.
Market
94 markets, each with its own languages
Pick the country the questions should come from and the language they should be in. A demand figure without a market is not a fact, so RankX AI never shows one without the other.
Depth
25, 50 or 100 questions a seed
Start shallow to see whether a topic has anything behind it, then go deeper on the ones that do. Depth is a fixed menu, not a free number, so a cached page can answer the next request.
Filters
A demand floor, and a word it must contain
Ask only for questions above a minimum estimated demand, or only for questions containing a word. The floor is optional on purpose: no questions is a worse answer than questions with no demand.
Your own brand name is never used as a seed. Questions about your brand are a different job with a different answer, and RankX AI builds those from your Brand Book rather than from a search corpus. Runs are saved, so a search you ran last week reopens rather than being retyped. Google AI Overviews is a separate surface: RankX AI reads it on your tracked keywords through the rank tracker, so the searches it answers come from keyword research rather than from here. The chips above are the sample scenario’s.
The method
How RankX AI scores a question: four signals, and one of them is an estimate.
Every candidate carries a score out of 100 built from four signals, and demand is only one of them, so a rare question about what you do outranks a common one that is not about you.
Relevance40 of 100
How close the question is to what you actually do
Scored against your services, your topic clusters and your Brand Book, and weighted highest because on a specific topic demand is the weakest of the four signals.
Demand25 of 100
An estimate of how often it is asked
Modelled by our data provider from Google's People Also Ask results for the market you chose, banded rather than used raw, with twelve months of history and a lift for a rising trend.
Shape coverage20 of 100
Whether you track anything of that kind yet
Every candidate is classified into one of eleven shapes, and a shape you track nothing in earns the full points, because an unmeasured kind of question is worth more than another example of a kind you already measure.
Source quality15 of 100
Where the question came from
A question an assistant generated itself while answering your prompts outranks one modelled from search data, and a question written by a language model ranks last, because it is the one source with no evidence outside the model.
The eleven shapes4 come back from prompt research; 7 are built from your Brand Book.
| Shape | What tracking it detects | Comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Round-up | Whether you appear when someone asks for the best options in your market | Prompt research |
| Situational | Whether you are cited in answers to the problem your customers actually describe | Prompt research |
| Capability | Whether you surface on the specific things you do that others do not | Prompt research |
| Head-to-head | Whether you are in the consideration set beside a named rival | Prompt research |
| Identity | Whether assistants know you exist, and describe you accurately | Brand Book |
| Provenance | Whether you have been confused with another company of the same name | Brand Book |
| Evaluation | What assistants say about how good you are | Brand Book |
| Fitness | Whether your positioning has landed on the right kind of customer | Brand Book |
| Pricing | Whether your commercial facts survived contact with the world | Brand Book |
| Alternatives | Whether you have become a reference point others are compared against | Brand Book |
| Reputation | What assistants repeat when someone asks whether you can be trusted | Brand Book, opt-in |
The estimateAn estimate of how often this is asked, modelled by our data provider from Google's People Also Ask results. It is not a count of ChatGPT or Gemini queries.
No figure is not zeroA question the provider prices at nothing is shown as “no estimate”, its score is marked partial, and it sorts below the priced rows rather than level with a measured zero. The row reading “Can a kitchen be refitted without replacing the worktops?” in the sample above is that case.
The scale is smallMeasured on 5 September 2026: a broad United States seed topped out at 164 a month, a mid-sized United Kingdom seed at 51, and a niche seed returned 16 questions of which 2 carried any figure. Twenty a month is a strong result here, and reading this metric against keyword volumes makes every result look like a failure.
The sample run above returns 4 different kinds of question from two seeds. The figures are illustrative and deliberately small, because in a market this specific they are small.
From question to measurement
Keep a question and it becomes a measurement the same day.
A research report you have to retype into a tracker is a report. RankX AI turns a question you keep into a tracked prompt and a filed topic in one action, and remembers the ones you refused.
Track a question and it joins your nightly prompt checks on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, from that night on.
It is filed under a topic cluster in the same step, so the question you chose to measure is also the question your content plan has to answer.
Reject the rest, in bulk if you like. A rejected question is kept rather than deleted, so RankX AI never offers it again, and a rejection can be restored when the market moves.
What it costs
One price a run, and nothing when a run finds nothing.
A run costs 35 credits whether it returns four questions or four hundred, and it costs nothing at all when it returns none worth keeping. There is no research add-on.
- A run
- 35 credits, per run, up to 8 seeds
- A run that finds nothing
- Free. Credits are taken only once at least one question reaches your review queue, and the provider call RankX AI still paid for stays ours.
- A repeat of a recent search
- Repeating a recent search with the same topics, market and options is free: RankX AI keeps the questions behind a seed for 30 days, and a run that needs no fresh provider work opens no charge. Change a seed, the market or an option and the run is charged in full.
- Tracking a question
- Adds it to your nightly checks at 5 credits per assistant per check from then on. That recurring cost is what this research exists to spend well.
- The trial
- 1,000 credits for 7 days, which covers 28 runs, or fewer runs plus the nightly checks on the questions you keep. Starter then carries 5,000 credits a month.
- Who has it
- Every plan, the trial included. No separate research subscription and no per-seat research fee.
Every credit rate on the site is published on the pricing page and in the credit cost reference, this one included.
Where it sits
Prompt research and keyword research answer different questions, and RankX AI runs both.
Keyword research reads what people type into a search box, prompt research finds what they ask an assistant, and trends research says whether a subject is moving right now.
| Criterion | Keyword research | AI prompt research |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | A keyword, usually a two or three word phrase | A question, often ten words or more |
| Where the demand figure comes from | Counted search volume from the data provider, per market | An estimate modelled from Google's People Also Ask results; no assistant publishes query counts |
| What tracking it measures | Your Google position, and whether Google AI Overviews cites you | Whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot name you in the answer |
| What a kept result becomes | A tracked keyword, a task or a brief | A tracked prompt, filed under a topic cluster in one step |
| What a run costs | 35 credits per seed discovery run | 35 credits per run, up to 8 seeds |
The full comparison, with the measured prompt-length figures, is in why the two return different lists, and the figure itself is defined in what prompt volume is, and why nobody has it.
Which questions should I measure?
AI prompt research, this page. Seed a topic, read back the questions people ask assistants around it, and keep the ones worth a nightly check.
Which searches should I chase?
Keyword research, the sibling surface. The same market controls over what people type into a search box rather than into an assistant, scored for opportunity.
What is moving right now?
Trends research, the third surface. Up to five terms compared on Web Search, News, YouTube or Shopping, with a momentum verdict and the queries rising around them.
The terms in the pictures are the sample scenario’s, and they are the same invented brand the keyword research page uses, so the two surfaces can be read against each other.
Who it is for
Built for the marketer who owns the list, and the agency that owns twenty of them.
AI prompt research is on every plan, so the question is whether the job is yours: choosing which AI prompts a brand should be measured on, for one brand or for a client portfolio.
In-house marketer
You own the prompt list and the budget it spends
Seed your services, read back the questions buyers ask, keep the ones worth a nightly check and reject the rest so they are never offered again.
A researched list survives the meeting where the budget is questioned.
SEO and GEO agency
One run per client, filed into that client's workspace
Every client website has its own runs, its own review queue and its own tracked prompts, and prompt research sits behind the same client permission as AI visibility, so a client can see what you chose to measure.
A prompt set you can show beats one you have to explain.
Founder
Know what buyers ask before you pay to measure it
Leave the seeds empty and RankX AI derives them from your services, your topic clusters and your own Search Console queries, so the first run needs nothing from you except a market and a language.
Twenty-five questions from one seed tells you whether a topic has anything behind it.
Two jobs it does not do. It cannot count what people ask ChatGPT, because no assistant publishes that to anybody, and any tool that implies otherwise is selling an estimate under another name. And it does not research questions about your brand by name: RankX AI builds those from your Brand Book, where the facts live, rather than from a search corpus.
Questions
Questions about AI prompt research tools.
Direct answers on what AI prompt research is, what the demand estimate is and is not, what it costs, and where the questions go next.
What is AI prompt research?
AI prompt research is the work of finding which questions people put to AI assistants and answer engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot about a market, so you know which AI prompts are worth tracking. RankX AI ranks each candidate question by relevance, an estimate of demand, the kind of question it is, and whether you already track something like it. Every question you keep becomes a tracked prompt, checked nightly on the assistants RankX AI reads, and every question you reject is remembered so it is never offered again.
Is the demand figure real search volume from ChatGPT?
No, and nothing on this page will tell you otherwise. An estimate of how often this is asked, modelled by our data provider from Google's People Also Ask results. It is not a count of ChatGPT or Gemini queries. No product can count queries inside ChatGPT or Gemini, because none of them publishes that data to anybody. What the estimate is good for is ORDERING: it separates a question people demonstrably ask in public from one somebody invented in a meeting, which is the decision you are actually making.
How is prompt research different from keyword research?
Keyword research tools read what people type into a search box and count it; prompt research finds what people ask an assistant and estimates it. A keyword is a two or three word phrase with a measured search volume and a search intent label. A prompt is a conversational question, often ten words or more, and no assistant publishes how often it is asked, so every prompt figure anywhere is modelled from something else. RankX AI runs both from the same seeds and the same 94 markets and links each to the other, because the searches worth chasing and the questions worth tracking are rarely the same list.
How much does AI prompt research cost?
35 credits per run, up to 8 seeds, on every plan, from the same balance everything else spends. A run that returns nothing usable is free, and so is repeating a recent search with the same topics, market and options, because no fresh provider work is done. The 7-day trial carries 1,000 credits, which is 28 runs if you spent them on nothing else, and Starter starts at $49 a month with 5,000 credits. The cost that matters more comes after: tracking a kept question costs 5 credits per assistant per check, every night, which is the bill this research exists to spend well.
What does a blank demand column mean?
One of three things, and RankX AI keeps them apart because they lead to different decisions. An estimate means the provider modelled a figure, including a modelled zero. No estimate means it has nothing for that question, which is not the same as nobody asking. Could not be checked means the lookup itself failed on that run, which is our fault and not the data's. Only the first sorts.
What happens if a run finds nothing?
You are not charged. RankX AI takes the credits only when at least one question is saved to your review queue, so a seed that returns nothing usable costs you nothing even though the provider call was still made and paid for. That is deliberate: a run that produced no product should not be billed however correct the machinery was.
How do I find which prompts mention my brand in ChatGPT?
Two steps, and they are two features. AI prompt research finds the questions people ask about your market and lets you keep the ones worth measuring. AI visibility then asks each kept prompt every night on the AI platforms RankX AI reads, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, and records whether the answer names you, cites you and what it says, so the prompts that mention your brand are the ones whose nightly check comes back with a mention. Read the trend over weeks rather than one answer: SparkToro and Gumshoe ran 12 prompts 2,961 times in 2026 and found under a 1 in 100 chance of the same brand list twice. Google AI Overviews is read separately, on your tracked keywords.
What do I do with the questions it finds?
Track them, reject them, or leave them. Tracking a question adds it to your checked prompts and files it under a topic cluster in the same step, so the measurement and the content plan start from one decision. Rejecting keeps the question in a rejected view so it is never offered to you again, and a rejection can be restored if you change your mind.
Will it suggest prompts I am already tracking?
It flags them instead. Every candidate is compared against the prompts on your project, and a near-duplicate is marked as one before you spend anything. That matters more than it sounds: a tracked prompt is a recurring nightly cost on every assistant, so the cheapest question RankX AI can find is the one it stops you tracking twice.
How many prompts should I track, and how often should I research?
Start with two or three seeds at 25 questions each, keep the ten to twenty with the best scores across more than one shape, and run again when you add a service, enter a market or notice a shape you track nothing in. Published vendor guidance ranges from 20 to 40 prompts (SE Ranking, 2026) to a few hundred (Profound, 2026). The right number is the one whose nightly bill you will keep paying, which is the arithmetic RankX AI puts beside every candidate before you keep it.
Does it work for a niche market?
Yes, and the numbers will be small, which is the honest result. A niche seed measured on 5 September 2026 returned 16 questions of which 2 carried any demand figure; the rest were scored on relevance, shape and source, marked partial, and sorted below the priced rows rather than dropped. RankX AI covers 94 markets, each with its own languages, and a run that finds nothing usable is not charged, so trying a narrow seed costs nothing when it comes back empty.
Which plans include AI prompt research?
Every one of them, the trial included. There is no separate research add-on and no per-seat fee, and your credit balance is visible before you search rather than after.
What should I look for in an AI prompt research tool?
Five things, stated on the page rather than in a sales call, whether the tool calls it prompt research or prompt discovery. Where the demand figure comes from, because no assistant publishes query counts and a tool that says real without a method is asking for trust it has not earned. Whether an absent estimate is kept apart from a zero. What a run costs, and whether an empty run is charged. Whether it flags questions you already track. And whether a kept question becomes a tracked prompt in the same tool or a spreadsheet you retype. RankX AI answers all five on this page.
How is this different from AI visibility tracking?
They are the two halves of one job. AI prompt research decides WHICH questions are worth measuring; AI visibility measures how you do on the ones you chose, night after night, across every assistant RankX AI tracks. Research is a search you run when you need new questions, at up to 25 a seed; visibility is the standing measurement underneath. Neither is much use without the other.
