What it checks
Two Google results, and the facts each one needs
Google reads Product structured data for two kinds of result. The checker tests a page against the documented rules for both, then checks the page itself for anything that would keep it out of search.
Merchant listings
Shopping results and free listings
Required: a name, an image and an offer with a price above zero and a currency. Recommended: stock, condition, brand, GTIN, shipping and returns. Each value is checked against the forms Google accepts.
Product snippets
Price and stars under your result
A name plus an offer, a review or an aggregate rating. A rating needs its value and a count above zero, and the value cannot be higher than the best rating.
The page
Nothing blocking it
A noindex that keeps the page out of search, a canonical pointing elsewhere, two Product blocks that disagree, JSON-LD that cannot be parsed, and a price that differs from the one the page shows.
Every other type
The rest of the schema
Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage, Article, VideoObject, LocalBusiness and Review markup, each against its own rules, so one check covers the home page, collections and blog posts as well.
From result to fix
Each finding says where to fix it on your platform
The checker recognises Shopify and WooCommerce pages, so a missing brand, GTIN, rating or return policy comes with the field to fill in or the setting to change on that platform, and the exact markup for any other site.
JSON-LD or microdata
Both are read
Most themes print JSON-LD. Older themes print microdata inside the HTML instead; the checker reads that too and judges it by the same rules.
Missing markup
Write it, then check again
Open the result in the Product Schema Generator with every value the page already states filled in, or set your returns and shipping once store-wide with the Schema Markup Generator.
Confirm
Google’s own test
Every result links to Google’s Rich Results Test for the same address, the final word on what Google itself renders.
Questions
About the Schema Markup Checker
What is product schema?
Product schema is structured data, usually a JSON-LD block in the page, that states a product name, image, price, currency, stock and identifiers in a form search engines read directly. Google uses it for merchant listings in shopping results and for product snippets with price and stars.
What does the Schema Markup Checker test?
Every property Google lists as required or recommended for merchant listings, the rating rules for product snippets, whether the price is a plain number above zero, whether the currency, availability and condition values are ones Google accepts, whether the GTIN has a valid check digit, and whether the page blocks indexing or names another canonical address.
Is this the same as Google Rich Results Test?
No. Google Rich Results Test renders the page as Googlebot and is the final word on eligibility. This checker reads the markup a page sends and explains each gap in plain language, with the fix, and it catches problems Google only warns about, such as an expired sale date or a price that disagrees with the page.
Why does it say a property is recommended rather than required?
Google requires only a name, an image and an offer with a price and currency for merchant listings. Recommended properties such as brand, GTIN, availability, shipping and returns are not mandatory, but they decide which details Google can show and how well your product matches searches for it.
My page has two Product blocks. Is that a problem?
Often it is. It usually means the theme and an app both add markup, and when the two disagree on price or stock Google has to choose. Keep one complete block. A product group with variants is fine and is counted as one product.
Does it check schema types other than Product?
Yes. Product and its offer, shipping, returns and ratings get the deepest check, because they decide shopping results. Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage, Article, VideoObject, LocalBusiness and Review markup are each checked against Google’s own rules, so you can run your home page, collections and blog posts through the same schema checker.
Does it read microdata as well as JSON-LD?
Yes. Some older themes print schema as microdata attributes in the HTML instead of a JSON-LD block. The checker reads both and judges them by the same rules, and it tells you which one it found.
How is this different from the Schema Markup Validator?
The Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org checks that markup follows the schema.org vocabulary. This checker goes further for stores: it checks the properties Google requires for shopping results and stars, catches values Google rejects, such as a price with a currency sign or an invalid GTIN, and says how to fix each one on Shopify or WooCommerce.
Can it check pages behind a login or a firewall?
No. It sees what a visitor sees without logging in. Some stores block automated requests at their firewall; the checker says when the site refused to show the page.
