Ecommerce platforms and SEO
There is no single best ecommerce platform for SEO: every major ecommerce platform can rank well in search results, and the platform decides how much technical SEO it handles for you, not whether your online store can rank. Shopify and BigCommerce are hosted and look after the XML sitemap and canonical tags themselves, while WooCommerce and Magento (Adobe Commerce) give you full control and more to look after. Your product pages, category pages, site structure and content strategy matter more than the platform, and RankX AI measures and improves them on all five.
| Platform | SEO it handles for you | What to look after | RankX AI there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Hosting, sitemap.xml, robots.txt and canonical tags | Fixed URL paths such as /products/ and /collections/, and several apps editing the same SEO fields | An app inside your Shopify admin, with a free plan |
| WooCommerce | WordPress core, plus titles, sitemaps and schema from an SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math | Hosting speed, plugin conflicts and duplicate URLs from filters and tags | The web app, connected through WordPress, writing approved fixes to your store |
| BigCommerce | Hosting, an XML sitemap and SEO fields on each product | Canonical tags on filtered and sorted category pages | The web app, with steps for the BigCommerce admin |
| Magento (Adobe Commerce) | Detailed SEO settings for each product, category and store view | Layered navigation URLs, canonical settings and site speed, which often need a developer | The web app, with steps for the Magento admin |
| PrestaShop | Friendly URLs and SEO fields on each product | Friendly URLs switched on, and duplicate pages from product combinations | The web app, with steps for the PrestaShop admin |
Shopify SEO starts with technical basics the platform handles for you, such as the sitemap, robots.txt and canonical tags. Shopify does not write your search titles, meta descriptions or alt text, or tell you which fix matters most. The RankX AI Shopify app checks those across the store, and the product check and SEO score are on its free plan.
Ecommerce SEO is search engine optimization for product pages and category pages as well as articles, so product data, duplicate URLs from filters and variants, and structured data matter more. Shopping answers in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode add another place to be seen. RankX AI tracks AI answers and AI shopping beside your Google data, for a store in one place.
Treat SEO as one factor beside cost, catalogue size and the skills of your team, because every major platform can rank. For a store that already sells, moving platforms means redirecting every URL, so fixing the store you have is usually the faster win. RankX AI shows what to fix first on whichever platform you use.
Usually, yes. Magento (Adobe Commerce) gives you layered navigation, store views and caching to configure, which means the most control and the most settings to get right, while hosted Shopify fixes more of them for you. WooCommerce sits between the two, because your hosting and plugins decide its speed and how many duplicate URLs it creates.
The same best practices apply everywhere: a unique title tag and meta description for each product page and category page, one H1, alt text on images and structured data. These on-page basics help search engines read a page and give shoppers a better user experience from the first click. The RankX AI audit flags the pages that miss them, whatever platform you are on.
It can: search titles and product pages that match what a shopper searched for, load fast and answer their questions bring visits that are more likely to buy. Ranking is the first half, and organic traffic is worth what it converts. In the web app, RankX AI shows the visits and sales that start at an AI assistant from your Google Analytics, so you see conversions beside SEO performance.
For most stores, yes: organic search brings shoppers who are already looking for what you sell, and you do not pay for each click. It takes steady work, which is why measuring it matters. RankX AI starts with a free plan on Shopify or a 7-day free trial in the web app.
Plan in months rather than days, because search engines have to recrawl a page before a change can move it and competitive keywords take longer. Technical fixes usually show first, once the pages are recrawled, while new content takes longer to earn rankings. Good SEO strategies track the same keywords over time, so you can see when a change started to move.
Not to start: most stores can find and fix their first SEO issues themselves with clear data and steps for their platform. An SEO agency earns its fee on migrations, very large catalogues or content at scale. RankX AI has agency plans too, so an agency and its clients can work from the same audit and tracking.
Side by side
AI answers and AI shopping are measured the same way everywhere; where a fix can be written for you depends on the platform.
