RankX AI

Free tool

The free AI Overview Checker shows who Google’s AI Overviews cite.

RankX AI runs a live Google search for your keyword in the market and device you choose, reads the AI Overview, and emails you its answer and every source it cites.

Free, one keyword at a time. The next step asks where to send the report: three free reports per email address.

Free AI audit

What it is

A free AI Overview checker, with the full report by email.

An AI Overview checker shows whether a Google search displays an AI Overview, what the Overview says and which sites it cites.

  • What it is

A live Google search, read for you

RankX AI’s AI Overview Checker runs one real Google search for your keyword, in the market and on the device you pick, and asks for the AI Overview content that loads after the results page. Add your domain and the report says whether the Google AI Overview cited you, which makes it an AI Overview visibility report for that keyword.

A yes or no on your citation, and the sources chosen over you.

  • Who it is for

SEO teams, content leads and founders

SEO and content teams checking whether their pages appear in AI Overviews for a money keyword, or whether Google now answers it above the results; agencies showing a prospect who Google cites in their place; founders deciding whether a keyword deserves a new page before anyone writes it.

If a keyword pays the bills, read what Google says about it first.

  • What it costs to run

Free, three reports per email address

No account and no card. Each check buys a live Google search from a data provider, so the checker verifies your email address before anything is spent and sends the report there, with a link to the same report on the page. One keyword per report, in twelve markets, desktop or mobile.

A fixed market list, fair-use caps and a daily ceiling keep it free.

How the RankX AI email step works

Step one takes your keyword, market, device and, if you want the citation verdict, your domain. It sends nothing. Step two asks for an email address and, optionally, your name.

RankX AI then checks that the address can receive mail, which can take up to half a minute, and only after that runs the search, which takes 10 to 30 seconds. A disposable or undeliverable address is refused before anything is spent.

The report arrives by email, usually within a minute, and a link to the same report appears on the page once the check finishes. Each address gets three free reports, counted on the normalised address, so a plus tag or Gmail dots count as the same inbox. A report served from the 24-hour cache still counts as one.

After the third report the checker offers the 7-day free trial instead. The newsletter box under the email field is optional and never ticked for you.

What this checks

One check returns three facts about your AI Overview visibility.

The AI Overview Checker returns presence, the Overview’s own words and its cited sources, stamped with the market, device and date of the check.

Presence, without the false negative

Many AI Overviews load after the results page itself. A checker that reads only the first response reports no AI Overview for keywords that have one, which is the first thing to test in any free AI Overview tool. This check asks for the late-loading Overview content, so a no means Google showed none on this check, not that the tool gave up early.

The answer, as Google wrote it

When an Overview appears you can read what it says, not only that it exists. The words are the competitive fact: whether your category is described the way you describe it, which claims Google repeats, and whose framing the answer borrows decide what a buyer takes away without ever clicking.

Every cited source, with your verdict

The reference list shows each domain and page Google read to write the answer. Add your domain to the check and the report states plainly whether you are cited on this keyword. The sources that appear instead of you are the brief for the page you have not written yet.

Why it matters

Google AI Overviews favour comparisons, and their sources move.

The figures below are why one snapshot is worth taking, and why one snapshot is never enough.

Overviews sit on comparison questions

Among the informational queries in Seer Interactive’s 2026 study of 5.47 million searches, comparison questions showed an AI Overview 95% of the time and question-style searches 86%. Comparison questions are where buyers choose, which is why checking which of your own keywords trigger AI Overviews beats any sitewide average.

Being cited pays even as clicks fall

In Seer Interactive’s 2026 study, a page under an AI Overview that did not cite it earned about 72% fewer organic clicks on informational queries than a page with no Overview at all. Being cited recovers most of that gap and not all of it: a cited page still earned about 38% fewer. Being the Overview’s source is the remaining way to win the query.

One check is weather, not climate

Whether an Overview appears, what it says and which sources it cites change by market, device and day. Ahrefs found the share of AI Overview citations going to the organic top ten fell from 76% to 38% between July 2025 and March 2026, across 863,000 searches. That is why every report here is stamped with where and when it looked.

Figures are from independent studies by Seer Interactive (April 2026) and Ahrefs (March 2026), not from RankX AI data.

Reading the result

Cited or not, the reference list shows the next move.

Three situations cover almost every result, and each one has a concrete follow-up.

Cited: protect the page doing the work

Find which of your pages the Overview reads, and treat it as infrastructure: keep it current, keep it answer-first, and do not let a redesign bury the passage Google lifts. The AI Readiness Score checks that page’s mechanics in one run.

Score that page with the AI SEO checker

Not cited: the list is your brief

Read what Google chose instead: a directory, a forum thread, a rival’s comparison page. The format and depth of those sources show what Google considered worth reading for this query, and the missing entry is usually a page you can publish.

How to rank in Google AI Overviews

No Overview: check the controls, not the bots

There is no AI Overviews crawler to allow or block. Overviews build on ordinary Googlebot crawling, and Google-Extended governs training rather than inclusion. The site-wide switch is the Search generative AI setting in Search Console; snippet controls and noindex work per page. Re-check on mobile and in other markets before concluding anything.

How AI Overview visibility differs from assistant visibility

Keep the two apart, because the SEO work behind them differs. An AI Overview is part of Google search results, built from Google’s own crawl of pages that rank for your keywords, so classic SEO carries most of the way there. An answer from ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity comes from a different retrieval system with its own index, and your Google position predicts it poorly. This checker measures the first: visibility inside Google’s AI-generated answer on a keyword you care about. For the second, the free AI Visibility Checker asks ChatGPT and Gemini directly, and the paid RankX AI visibility tool tracks the assistants on a schedule.

Continuous tracking, with every check kept as its own record and every cited domain ranked, is what the RankX AI Overview tracker does across every keyword you track. How Google’s other AI surface behaves is covered in Google AI Mode versus AI Overviews.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about the AI Overview checker.

What it costs, why it asks for an email, why your own search can differ, and how a citation is won.

What is an AI Overview checker?

An AI Overview checker is a tool that runs a Google search for a keyword and reports whether an AI Overview appeared, what it said and which sources it cited. RankX AI’s free checker does this for one keyword at a time, in the market and on the device you choose, and emails you the full report.

Where do Google AI Overviews appear?

A Google AI Overview appears at the top of search results, above the traditional links, for many searches: an AI-written answer that summarises the topic and cites a set of source links. For the searcher it often ends the visit before any blue link is clicked. For a site owner it is a surface you can be cited on, or replaced on, independent of your organic ranking, which is why the AI Overview Checker reports both the answer and its sources.

Is the AI Overview Checker free?

Yes. It is free to use for three reports per email address, with no account and no card. A single check costs RankX AI real money at a data provider, so the AI Overview Checker verifies your address before it runs and emails you the report. Reports are cached for 24 hours per keyword, market and device, and a cached report still counts as one of the three. Fair-use limits apply per visitor, the market list is fixed, and a daily ceiling stops the tool for the day rather than running up a bill.

Why does the checker need my email address?

Because the email is how the report reaches you, and how three free reports per person can mean anything. The AI Overview Checker confirms that the address can receive mail before it spends anything on the search, refuses disposable addresses, and counts reports on the normalised address, so plus tags and Gmail dots are one inbox. Your address is used to send that report and for nothing else unless you tick the optional newsletter box. Once the check finishes, the page also shows a link to the same report.

Does it work for my country and device?

The AI Overview Checker covers twelve markets: the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and India. Each is checked as a country, in that market’s search language, not as a city. Choose desktop or mobile, because the same keyword can show an AI Overview on one and not the other, so a keyword that matters on both is worth two checks.

Why did I get a different result from my own search?

Because your own search is not a neutral sample. Google shapes it by where you are within a country, your search history and signed-in account, your language settings and the moment you search, and an AI Overview can appear on one run and not the next. The checker runs one search from the market and device you picked, with none of your history attached, and stamps the report with when it looked. A difference usually means the Overview is unstable for that keyword, which is worth knowing in itself.

Is an AI Overview the same as Google AI Mode?

No. AI Overviews sit inside the ordinary results page and appear on Google’s initiative; AI Mode is a separate conversational search the user chooses, which retrieves with its own fan-out searches and cites differently. The AI Overview Checker reports AI Overviews only, because that is the surface attached to the searches your pages already compete on. The detail is in Google AI Mode versus AI Overviews.

How do I get my site cited in an AI Overview?

Nobody can promise a citation, and you should distrust anyone who does, but the inputs are knowable. Be indexed and snippet-eligible, since AI Overviews draw on ordinary Google crawling. Answer the query directly near the top of a page that covers the question fully. And study what the Overview cites now: the reference list shows the format and depth Google chose. The AI SEO checker for one page tests the mechanical half, and how to rank in Google AI Overviews covers the editorial half.

Is there an AI Overviews crawler I can allow or block?

No. AI Overviews have no dedicated bot: they are built from ordinary Google Search crawling by Googlebot. Blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot or any other AI crawler has no effect on AI Overviews, and Google-Extended does not remove a site from them either: it governs training, including the training of the models behind AI Overviews and AI Mode, never inclusion. Search Console's Search generative AI setting, under Settings, removes a site from AI Overviews and AI Mode and leaves its ordinary results untouched. It has applied to every site since 31 August 2026. For single pages, nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex still limit what an AI Overview may use, and each one also changes the ordinary result.

What are the cited sources, and why do they matter?

Each AI Overview carries a reference list, the pages Google read to write the answer, and the report shows every one with its domain, title and URL, so you can see whether your page is cited. When your domain is missing, that list is the brief for what to publish, because it shows the sources Google uses for this query. A directory, a forum thread and a rival in that list usually means there is a page you have not written yet.

Does being cited in an AI Overview bring traffic?

Being cited is worth real clicks even as overall clicks fall. Seer Interactive’s 2026 study of 5.47 million queries found that on informational queries, a page under an AI Overview that did not cite it earned about 72% fewer organic clicks than a page with no Overview at all. Being cited recovers most of that gap and not all of it: a cited page still earned about 38% fewer. The Overview takes the click either way, and being its source is the remaining way to win the query.

How does the checker get its data?

The AI Overview Checker runs a real Google search for your keyword, market and device through a search data provider, reads the whole results page (the SERP), and asks specifically for the AI Overview content that loads after the main results page. A checker that does not wait for that content reports no AI Overview when one exists, so this is the first thing to test in any free AI Overview tool.

Can I check many keywords at once?

Yes, with the AI Overview tracker in RankX AI, which checks a whole keyword set on a schedule. The tracker reads every rank check of every keyword you track and keeps each result, so a citation won or lost shows up in the history rather than in a one-off report. The free checker is built for one keyword per report.

How many searches trigger an AI Overview?

No published rule decides it: Google chooses per query and per run. Among the informational queries in Seer Interactive’s 2026 study of 5.47 million searches, comparison questions showed an AI Overview 95% of the time and question-style searches 86%. That spread is why checking which of your own keywords trigger AI Overviews beats any sitewide average, and why a keyword that matters is worth checking rather than assuming.

Why do results vary between checks?

Because AI Overviews are unstable. Whether one appears, what it says and which sources it cites vary by market, device and day. That is why every report from the AI Overview Checker states the market, device and date it was checked from, and why a single check is a snapshot rather than a verdict. Tracking how a keyword changes over time is how the signal separates from the churn, which is what the RankX AI Overview tracker does.
