When does ChatGPT show product cards?

When it reads shopping intent in the question: OpenAI’s help page gives “Help me find costumes for my dog” as the sort of prompt that produces product options with imagery, details and links to buy. The card is the unit of the whole experience. A shopper never sees your feed or your ranking, only a short carousel, so the practical questions are whether your product is in it, in what position, and at what price it was shown.

Which products make the carousel depends on relevance to the question and the shopper's context, and the same prompt does not reliably return the same cards. That instability is the same reason single checks mean little anywhere in AI search: what can be measured honestly is a rate over repeated checks, not a rank.

Are the results ads, and where does the data come from?

OpenAI’s stated rule is that “product results are chosen independently and are not ads”. The product data behind the cards comes increasingly from merchants themselves: OpenAI invites merchants to share product feeds, and named launch retailers include Target, Sephora and Nordstrom. That shifts the work of being recommendable from prose to structured data, because a card can only show the attributes the feed carried.

For anyone measuring the surface, the same fact sets the method: what can be observed is the rendered carousel, as a shopper sees it, so honest tracking reads the cards out of real answers and matches them against a catalogue via a product feed's identifiers. A card that names no seller is still a card someone else won, which is why a merchant view built only from cards that matched your own products would flatter you.

For a shop, the consequence is blunt: the carousel is becoming a storefront, not a referrer. A product that is absent from ChatGPT Shopping is absent from a surface where the transaction itself can now happen, which is a harder loss than a missed click.
