# How to Rank in AI Search: Platform by Platform

Ranking in AI search means being retrieved by five separate systems rather than winning one position. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity each run their own retrieval layer over their own index, and only about 11 per cent of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity. Four practices help on every platform. Everything after that is per-platform work.

## How do you rank in AI search?

There is no single AI search ranking to win, which is the first thing to accept. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity each decide independently which pages enter the context their answer is written from, so the same site can be prominent on one and absent from another. The work therefore splits in two: a shared floor, then per-platform effort.

Four practices help on every platform, and they are the ones worth doing first. Server-render every word that must be found, because no AI crawler executes JavaScript. Structure your content so each section opens with its answer, because retrieval lifts passages rather than whole pages. Keep one canonical brand name everywhere, so an AI system can resolve who you are. And earn presence on the third-party sites your buyers read, because that is where commercial AI responses are sourced.

## How is ranking in AI search different from traditional SEO?

Ranking in AI search differs from traditional SEO in what actually competes. A traditional search engine ranks pages and returns a list a person chooses from. AI search retrieves passages and returns one answer, so the competing unit is a section rather than a page, and the prize is being quoted rather than being clicked.

Two mechanical differences follow. Retrieval scores your content against synthetic sub-queries the system generates, not the question the person typed, so a page has to answer questions nobody entered. And four of the five assistants read raw HTML only, because their crawlers do not execute JavaScript, which makes server-side rendering a precondition rather than a performance choice.

Most of traditional SEO carries over unchanged, which is the part the more excitable guides understate. Indexing, crawl access, internal links, clear structure and content worth reading all still decide whether a page is retrievable at all. The one common own-goal is blocking AI crawlers by accident, usually at the CDN, and usually while intending to block training rather than search.

The two worlds meet in [Google AI Mode](/glossary/google-ai-mode), which answers conversationally from the same index that serves ordinary results. ## Why AI search is five channels rather than one

AI search is five channels because the five assistants retrieve from five different indexes. A page that ChatGPT finds easily may be invisible to Claude, not because it is worse, but because Claude is querying Brave's index and ChatGPT is querying its own. Optimising for one and assuming the rest follow is the most expensive mistake in this field.

The overlap between those channels is small and it has been measured. Profound ran 100,000 identical prompts through ChatGPT and Perplexity and found only 11 per cent of cited domains appeared on both. Ahrefs, testing ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity across 15,000 long-tail queries, found the share of AI-cited URLs that also rank in Google's top 10 ranged from 6.1 per cent to 28.6 per cent depending on the platform, averaging 11.9 per cent.

RankX AI's own tracking shows the same spread on a much smaller panel. Across 218 analysed answers in the 30 days to 21 August 2026, the brand was named in 20.2 per cent of answers overall, with Grok, ChatGPT and Gemini all near 23 per cent and Claude at 20.4 per cent. Perplexity named it in 5 of 44 answers, 11.4 per cent, about half the rate of everywhere else. The full method and its limits are in [our AI visibility baseline](/blog/our-ai-visibility-baseline).

## Does ranking in Google still get you cited in AI search?

Google rankings still help, but much less than the figure most guides quote, and that figure is now two studies out of date. The number circulating on this SERP is that 76 per cent of Google AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in the top 10. Ahrefs published it in 2025, then superseded it with its own larger follow-up, and the correction is large enough to change what a site should work on.

In that test, pages ranked 11 to 100 supplied 26.2 per cent of AI Overview citations and pages outside the top 100 supplied 36.7 per cent. Ahrefs ran a second test counting every SERP block rather than blue links only, which puts the top 10 at 37.9 per cent, positions 11 to 100 at 31.2 and beyond 100 at 31.0, and headlines the pair as 38 per cent. Quote three numbers from one test or the other, never one from each.

The likeliest driver of the fall is that Gemini 3 became the default model behind AI Overviews in January 2026 and fans queries out more aggressively, drawing on a wider pool of sources per answer.

### Why 37 per cent and 92 per cent are both true

Those two figures look contradictory and are not, because they count different things. SEranking asked how many AI Overviews contain at least one top-10 domain, and got 92.36 per cent. Ahrefs asked what share of all cited URLs come from top-10 pages, and got 37.1 per cent. An answer citing eight sources, one of which ranks third, satisfies both at once.

The practical reading matters more than either number on its own. Ranking in the top 10 is what gets a site into the candidate pool, and it is close to a precondition. Most of the seats at the table then go to pages that do not rank there. Chasing position 3 to win one citation slot, while ignoring the sub-questions that fill the other seven, is the strategy those two figures rule out together.

One caution on freshness, which cuts against the older number: the SEranking research is from November 2024 and predates both Gemini 3 and the fan-out expansion that followed it. Treat 92.36 per cent as the direction rather than today's dose.

## Why do so many guides still quote 76 per cent?

Guides still quote 76 per cent because the page carrying that figure was never corrected, and the stale number is not confined to careless blogs. Ahrefs' own guide to ranking in AI Overviews, published on 20 January 2026, states that 76 per cent of cited pages rank in the top 10 with a median position of 2. That guide ranked third for this query at the time of writing.

Ahrefs published the 37.1 per cent correction roughly two months later, on a sample more than twice the size, as a separate article. The earlier guide still carries the old figure. Nobody is being dishonest here: a research update and an evergreen how-to are different pages with different review cycles, and this is what content decay looks like at a publisher that does good work.

Two things follow. A page that ranks 40th for its head term is a realistic citation candidate now, which changes the economics of pages a team had written off. And a guide quoting 76 per cent in 2026 is repeating a number its own publisher replaced, which is a fair test to apply to the rest of what that guide claims.

## How to rank in ChatGPT

Ranking in ChatGPT starts with letting the right crawler in, because ChatGPT retrieves from an index OpenAI builds itself. [OAI-SearchBot](/glossary/oai-searchbot) is the bot that populates ChatGPT Search. GPTBot is the training crawler and ChatGPT-User handles user-triggered fetches. Blocking GPTBot does not remove a site from ChatGPT Search; blocking OAI-SearchBot does, and the two are confused constantly.

What distinguishes ChatGPT from the other four is that its retrieval channel decides almost everything, so a page reaching that index matters more than any social presence. ## How to rank in Claude

Ranking in Claude means ranking in Brave Search, which is the fact that makes Claude different from the other four. Anthropic added Brave Search to its published subprocessor list on 20 March 2025, when web search launched for Claude. A Bing or Google playbook does not carry over, because Brave runs its own independent index.

Anthropic also runs [Claude-SearchBot](/glossary/claudebot), which indexes pages to improve Claude's search results, and Claude-User for user-triggered fetches. Both are controlled independently of ClaudeBot, the training crawler. A site that blocked ClaudeBot to opt out of training and assumed it had opted out of everything is still eligible for Claude's answers, and a site that blocked all three is not.

Claude is the platform with the least published research behind it, and that is worth stating rather than papering over. No large-sample citation study of Claude exists at the time of writing. The defensible actions are the documented ones: confirm Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User receive 200s in your server logs, and check whether Brave Search returns your pages for the questions you care about.

## How to rank in Gemini

Ranking in Gemini is the closest thing to ordinary Google SEO on this list, because Gemini rides Google's index and rendering infrastructure. Gemini is also the only assistant of the five whose crawler renders JavaScript, since it inherits Googlebot's rendering. That is a genuine exception to the rule that AI crawlers see only raw HTML, and it is not a reason to relax the rule, because the other four do not.

[Google-Extended](/glossary/google-extended) is the control that matters and it is widely misread. Google-Extended governs Gemini training and grounding outside Search. It does not opt a site out of AI Overviews, which are governed by ordinary indexing and by snippet controls. A restrictive max-snippet directive caps what Google's AI answers may quote, which makes it a self-inflicted visibility limit. Gemini is also where brand naming behaves opposite to ChatGPT. In the Semrush data Gemini named the brand in 83.7 per cent of appearances while citing it as a source in only 21.4 per cent. A brand measuring Gemini by source links alone will conclude it is invisible there when it is being talked about more than anywhere else.

## How to rank in Grok

Ranking in Grok means being visible in two pools at once, because Grok composes answers from the open web and the live X post graph in parallel. No other assistant on this list reads a social graph as a first-class retrieval source. A brand discussed on X has a route into Grok that has no equivalent in ChatGPT or Claude.

Grok's deeper research mode splits a question into sub-queries, runs web and X searches in parallel, follows fresh links and repeats until it hits a step limit. That is [query fan-out](/blog/query-fan-out) with a social feed attached, and it makes recency unusually valuable: Grok can cite material published hours earlier, which the other four generally cannot.

The honest caveat is that Grok is the least independently studied of the five, and the vendor-published guides on it are thin. RankX AI's own 30-day panel put Grok near 23 per cent, level with ChatGPT and Gemini, on 218 answers. That is a baseline on a small panel rather than a benchmark, which is the only claim a panel that size supports.

## How to rank in Perplexity

Ranking in Perplexity means satisfying its own index and its own rerankers, which Perplexity runs itself rather than renting from a search engine. Google rank correlates with Perplexity citation without being the mechanism, so treating a Google position as the lever produces disappointment. [PerplexityBot](/glossary/perplexitybot) is the crawler that builds the index and it must be allowed.

Perplexity-User is a separate agent that fetches a page because a person asked for it, and Perplexity documents that it generally ignores robots.txt. Robots directives are therefore not an access control on this platform, only a request to the indexing crawler. Plan for the fetch happening either way.

Perplexity was the outlier in RankX AI's own tracking, naming the brand in 11.4 per cent of answers against 20.3 per cent everywhere else. It was also the most accurate of the eight engines Columbia's Tow Center tested across 1,600 queries, with a 37 per cent error rate where ChatGPT Search ran at 67 per cent. Lower citation rate, higher accuracy: a Perplexity citation is harder to earn and worth more when it lands.

## Why Google AI Overviews is not a sixth assistant

Google AI Overviews is a search results feature, not an assistant, and treating it as a sixth platform is the error running through most writing on AI search. An [AI Overview](/glossary/ai-overview) is triggered by a keyword on a results page and drawn from Google's index. The five assistants are separate products reached by conversation. They need different tracking, because one is keyed on keywords and the other on prompts.

The clearest evidence RankX AI has for the split is its own null. Across the 30 days to 21 August 2026, an AI Overview appeared on 59 of 60 checks against five tracked keywords, 98 per cent of the time, and cited the site on none of them. In the same window the five assistants named the brand in 20.2 per cent of 218 answers. Near-total presence of the feature, zero citation from it, and healthy assistant visibility alongside.

### Where Google AI Mode fits

Google AI Mode is a third thing again: a conversational surface inside the Google search engine, answering from Google's index rather than from a separate one. Ranking in AI Mode is closest to ranking in Gemini, because the retrieval is Google's underneath. The practical difference is that AI Mode fans a question out harder than a results page does.

Moz analysed nearly 40,000 search queries and found that 88 per cent of Google AI Mode citations were not present in the organic results at all, so only 12 per cent matched a URL already ranking. That is the same pattern as the AI Overview correction above, only stronger, and it points at the same instruction: cover the sub-questions a topic fans out into rather than defending one head-term position.

AI Mode and the AI Overview above it are not one surface, and Ahrefs measured how far apart they sit: the two cited the same URL 13.7 per cent of the time. ## Which AI platform should you work on first?

Start with the platform your buyers use, and note that the answer differs sharply depending on whether you sell to businesses or to consumers. The two best public datasets disagree in a way that is easy to miss, because they measure different populations. Reading only one of them is how teams end up working on the wrong assistant for a year.

For business audiences, Claude has become the surprise. Goodie's AI search traffic report tracked 41 business-facing brand sites and 2.8 million AI referral sessions, averaging each brand's share equally so that large sites cannot dominate the result. Between its May to August 2025 wave and its March to April 2026 wave, ChatGPT fell from 89.1 per cent of AI referrals to 62.6 per cent. Claude rose from 1.4 per cent to 18.5 per cent over the same period, overtaking Gemini at 10.6 per cent and Perplexity at 7.3 per cent.

Worldwide consumer traffic reverses that order. Similarweb's panel puts ChatGPT at roughly 53 per cent of generative AI web visits by May 2026, down from about 76 per cent a year earlier, with Gemini at 27 to 28 per cent and Claude at around 9 per cent. Claude is the second-largest AI referral source for B2B brands and the third-largest destination overall, and a team that picks its priorities from the wrong one of those two figures will misallocate a quarter of work.

Whichever you pick, measure it on a fixed panel of prompts run repeatedly rather than by spot checks. SparkToro's 2,961 runs found under a 1 in 100 chance that two runs of the same prompt return the same brand list, and roughly a 1 in 1,000 chance of the same order. A single check cannot tell you whether anything you did worked.

## Do you need to rank in Google to rank in AI search?

Not for the query a person actually types, and less than you did a year ago. Ahrefs analysed 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs in March 2026 and found 37.1 per cent of cited pages ranked in Google's top 10, down from 76 per cent in July 2025. Across assistants the figure is lower still: a separate Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries found an average of 11.9 per cent of AI-cited URLs in Google's top 10, and 80 per cent ranking nowhere in Google for the original prompt. Being indexed somewhere the platform retrieves from is the floor. A top-10 position is neither required nor sufficient.

## Which AI platform should you optimise for first?

Whichever one your buyers actually use, measured rather than assumed. There is no universal answer, because the platforms share little: only around 11 per cent of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity. If you have no data yet, ChatGPT is the defensible default on audience size alone, and Gemini is the cheapest to add because it rides Google infrastructure you are probably already maintaining.

## Is ranking in Google AI Overviews the same as ranking in AI search?

No, and conflating them is the most common error in guides on this subject. Google AI Overviews is a feature of a search results page, triggered by keywords and drawing on Google's index. The five assistants are separate products with their own retrieval systems, queried by conversation rather than by keyword. RankX AI tracked its own site for 30 days to 21 August 2026 and found an AI Overview present on 59 of 60 checks while citing the site zero times, in the same period the assistants named the brand in 20.2 per cent of answers.

## How long does it take to appear in AI search results?

There is no honest published figure, and any specific number you are quoted is invented. What can be said is that the input is crawling rather than ranking, so the bound is how often each platform's crawler fetches your pages, which you can read in your own server logs. Measure the change against your own previous month on a fixed prompt panel, because single checks cannot detect it: SparkToro found under a 1 in 100 chance that two runs of the same prompt return the same brand list.
